Putin the Boot in.

Hot on the deck shoe heels of my last blog, which looked into the accusations that gay marriage has a big impact on our nations inclement weather, I am here again to delve into the issues faced by being gay or being in a same-sex relationship in today’s supposedly educated society.

Not content with signing a law that bans “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” and imposing fines on those holding gay pride rallies, everybody’s favourite, Dobby the house elf look-alike and the world’s most often photographed topless President, Vladimir Putin, has decided in his infinite wisdom to welcome the gay community to Russia with open arms. Well maybe not fully open arms, maybe one slightly outstretched and the other bent with hand resting on hip, in a teapot mime fashion. In a recent interview in front of foreign reporters, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that homosexuals would be welcome in Sochi for the Olympics, so long as they don’t promote “gay propaganda” or “paedophilia among minors”. You see everybody knows that not only are homosexuals responsible for climate change, they are also all practicing paedophiles. Thank god Vlad was there to let us in on their dirty little secret, and I can’t wait for his insight into why Lesbians are to blame for terrorism and the decrease in the world’s wildflowers and butterflies.

Mr. Putin, not content with his categorizing of all homosexuals, then went on to make the same fatal mistake that most who are accused of something ridiculous do. He played the “I have loads of gay friends” card, which in his mind makes his comments perfectly acceptable. If he did genuinely have loads of “gay friends” as he claimed, I’m sure these supposed friends of his are now looking elsewhere for their friendship.

We then had the ongoing saga of the Gay couple, who were refused a night’s stay at a Cornish Bed & Breakfast by its Christian owners. Mr. and Mrs. Bull who run the B&B said that they regarded any sex outside of marriage a sin. Of course, being a gay couple means they will be rutting like Elk until the break of dawn, rather than just staying for a sleep and a light breakfast. This episode went back and forth for at least three years, with various appeals against the Judge’s decision in favour of the gay couple.

In Colorado last year a Bakery refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple, on the basis that homosexuality is a sin and against the bakery owner’s beliefs. A Judge ruled that as the cake shop had previously made a wedding cake for a couple of canine lovers (and I literally mean a dog wedding), not making it for a gay wedding because of religious beliefs just didn’t wash.

Somebody I know once told me about a night out they had at a West End Theatre in the heart of Soho. A friend of theirs was picking them up from outside the venue, and as they left to catch their ride, they were greeted by a “pack of gays” who were “draped” all over the friends car. “Well, we feared for our lives, it was really scary”, they said, as I sat confused with my mouth wide open. The statistics of gay on straight attacks are truly shocking with figures of 0% rising to a staggering 1% should Elton John bitch slap Putin.

So if we were to believe everything we are told, then being a homosexual means that you are a nymphomaniac, militant paedophile, with violent tendencies, whose partnership is deemed less important than that of dogs, oh and like Storm from the X-men you can manipulate the weather. That my friend is an impressive resume by anybody’s standards and all because of a person’s sexual preferences.

I still cannot comprehend why this is all still a burning issue. Who cares who a person is in love with? Be it another man, another woman or John Prescott. I know it’s an old cliché but surely the beauty of being a human is that we are all wonderfully different. Get your head out of whatever religious text you’re reading and make your judgments based on your own experiences and the person you’re dealing with. It’s too easy just to dismiss someone because that’s what you’ve been told to do. Open your eyes and your minds and treat your fellow humans equally. Life is too short.
